Being a good leader requires lots of patience, a virtue many of us do not have. Often, those who are the best at something are promoted into a leadership position, as that is the next step on the ladder, but before you take that step, well, make sure you know what you are getting into. If you don't have the patience to deal with folks who perform at sub-optimal levels and you cannot hold your tongue when face to face with them, then a leadership position may not be right for you.
Leadership is about inspiring others, motivating them to do their best and to work hard to better their best efforts for themselves and the team, as you work together to make it happen, solve problems or create a profit. Many superstars of humanity, have little patience and cannot "suffer fools" and that can be a huge problem for those entrusted in such important positions.
The benevolent dictator and renegade entrepreneurial strong-willed leader is no longer what the socialist leaning masses want. In today's governments, corporations and leadership positions folks are looking for someone that will build community, make folks feel wanted and demonstrate empathy and compassion. If all this sounds a little sickening to you or you find it appalling that this is the new paradigm of leadership then realize the world is changing.
So, before you take a leadership position realize what's expected and how you must conduct yourself, if you cannot handle this new style of leadership, then do not take the job, otherwise you are liable to hit resistance and an angry mob, that will call for your head, sprinkle your reputation with condemnation and leave you wondering what just happened. Think on this.
